180 degree rule preliminary task clip


Evaluation


In our group we discussed all of our individual ideas until we came up with one that was workable. I feel that we all contributed evenly to the planning process. We did come across some issues with the props and locations that we wanted to use which were not available for filming such as the lift. We were also going to initially set our film in a storage cupboard but discovered that it would be too difficult to film in there due it being too small. We were also going to use money and the prop that had to be handed over but during filming we had to change this to a ‘device’ as there was no money available at that time.
I filmed all of the shots with the rest of my group as the actors but we all contributed to where the camera should be positioned and what shots I should do.
I personally found the editing process difficult. I didn’t have as much of a role in this area as the others but I did have some input and guided the others in some aspects. I did have more input into the titles and music which really changed the feel to the clip, the music settings I found difficult to understand and we needed some help in this area.
The weakness of our group was keeping to the plan. When we were filming we didn’t refer to the story board and we ended up with a lot of shots that didn’t work in the way that we wanted to. For the practical part of the exam I will make sure that we refer to the story board.
Filming was the most enjoyable part of the task for me, I got to use the camera and experiment with different shots. If we were to improve the filming I would put something between the moments where Josh approaches Greg and when Greg is lying dead It is all very sudden and maybe confusing.

The production process has taught me how to use the camera and movie editing software and how productive I will need to be when it comes to doing the practical project. I have found it very useful and it has given me an idea into the quality of work that would need to be produced and the level of difficulty there is in producing a good quality film.

What we had to do - preliminary task

For our preliminary task we had to create a short clip focusing on the 180 degree rule. This means keeping the camera within the same side of and invisible axis throughout the whole clip so that we don’t confuse the viewers. We had to create a plan and a story board so we had a clear idea of what we had to do when it came to filming. Once we filmed our clip we then had to edit it on the macs so that our clip flowed and so that we could add music and edits too.

The 180-degree rule




The 180-degree rule is a guideline where the camera can only remain on the one side of an invisible axis when two people or objects are in a shot, the camera can be placed anywhere within the 180 degree angle so that the subjects remain on the same side of each other. If it crosses the line the subjects will appear to have swapped positions and the viewers get disorientated. The only exception for crossing the line is when the viewers can see the camera moving over the line.

Our preliminary task is to test our understanding of the 180 degree rule including the knowledge of these factors:
- continuity
- close ups (extreme) on objects
- objects passed
- where to place the camera when walking through a door
